Ethical, Legal and Social Issues

When dealing with prosthesis, one must think about the different issues at hand. The ethical, legal, and social issues dealing with this disability are very important to anyone considering an artificial installment. Cosmetic prosthesis has been used to hide disfigurements and missing parts. With advances in modern technology, this creation of lifelike limbs has been made possible. Prosthesis can now be created with the appearance of real arms and legs, even with your natural body coloration, such as veins, hair, fingerprints, and beauty marks.

Although adding these additional things to your fake arm or leg helps to create a more realistic body part,  the cost does increase.  Most cosmoses come pre- made in all different shapes and sizes. Another option for cosmoses is also a custom-made silicone cover, which can be created specially to match a person's skin tone, but not necessarily the more realistic features such as wrinkles. People with artificial limbs also have the choice of a way they chose to have their cosmoses attached. Using an adhesive, suction, stretchable, formfitting skin, or a skin sleeve.

The social issues dealing with prosthesis are that people with this disability benefit society by giving other handicapped people a purpose and a sense of belonging in a world that looks down on people who are different, or not "normal." The ethical issues in sports arise when technology is introduced. When people make it to the Olympics for running, yet they have no legs, it puzzles and amazes onlookers.

When scientists see that men and women with fake limbs can run just as fast, or even faster, than people with regular limbs, they start to question themselves. Could artificial limbs be more powerful than man's real limbs? What will happen when technology is able to create limbs that are more effective than natural limbs?
